Leadership and Management
Leadership is causing others to do things they wouldn't have done without your influence.
If you
have followers, you're a leader. If not ... then you're not.
Every small business needs strong leadership. The good news is, it's a skill that
can be learned.
And it's not what everyone thinks it is. The best research has proven that 'charismatic
leadership' is only fleeting, and usually counterproductive. The best leaders are usually quite low-
key and unappreciated.
Leadership is different to management. Managers focus on doing things right, making
improvement to methods. Leaders focus on doing the right things, which may mean stopping
current practices that are being well managed, to start doing things wholly differently, or doing
totally different things instead.
Small business management requires both strong leadership and
skilful management.
Entrepreneurs are usually inclined one way or the other. It is a rare person whose
interests and
skills are quite evenly divided.
Leaders are usually more inclined to strategy formulation; but light-on when it comes
to creating
a detailed action plan.
Managers are less inclined to challenge current direction and thinking; but are generally
better at
insisting on plans that add up and can be implemented. They are the ones who will monitor
progress and fine tune for results achievement.
So the need for teamwork is evident right from the top. No single person can possibly
have all
that is needed to grow and run a small business. Team building is required that facilitates
better goal setting, more effective change management, improved time management and
productivity, and excellent customer service.
